What if the seasons never changed?

What if the seasons never changed? What season would you want forever?

Winter
 Everything is dead. Rarely a bloom can be found. It’s bitterly cold and windy at times. Evergreens are strong and rustic providing a warmth to the cold. However, the snow can create a winter wonderland that displays God’s beauty like no other way I’ve ever witnessed. God’s handiwork….purely amazing. The Cardinals show themselves to remind us of loved ones gone. Cozy nights by the fire and watching many movies snuggled up on the couch next to loved ones. Game nights with the kids and late night conversations that you’d never have if you were playing outside.

Spring
 Days get longer now. Spring cleaning and yard work gets underway. What was dead now begins to come alive. Flowers bloom all around and the earth is a colorful rainbow of excitement and freedom. Animals come out from hibernation and people use the outdoors as their recreation spot. Kites are flown over fields of clovers and picnics are underway. Birds sing harmonious melodies that no human can replicate.

Summer
Flowers are now plentiful and grasses are green. It’s hot. Very hot. Sometimes it’s hard to even go out during the afternoon because the heat is unbearable. Evenings are filled with barbecues and poolside get-togethers with friends and family. Evenings that are unforgettable are made into memories. Stars shine so brightly that you could lay on that blanket in the grasses forever just gazing at that night sky in pure, utter amazement.

Fall
The trees leaves are tired and begin falling to the ground.  Days get shorter and those long summer nights out come to an end.  The trees may tire, but they choose to first show us gorgeous shades of reds, golds, purples, and oranges. It creates a brilliance of color across the horizon that people will travel to get a glimpse of. Campfires and s’mores are plentiful and bonfires invite the newest of friends.

What if the seasons never changed? What season would you want forever?

Perhaps, we should be thankful for what each season brings.

Just as the seasons of the year change, so do the seasons of our lives. Sometimes the season feels bitter cold and lonely, while other times the season feels lively and healthy. No matter the season you’re in right now, please know that God is with you and will never leave you. If you feel alone, look to the One who gives life and will walk beside you. Who do you think makes the flowers bloom in the spring time? If you feel afraid, look to the one who offers eternal protection. Who do you think tells the squirrels to gather their food and prepare for the winter? If you worry too much, take your burden to the Father. Who do you think feeds the birds that fly among us? If you are guilty, as we all are, kneel before the Almighty Lord and ask forgiveness. His mercies are bountiful and He loves you regardless of what you've done. Just come to the Cross. No matter your season. God is there waiting.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

PSALM 30:5

Honestly, I was very intentional when I made this photograph. I knew I wanted to add scripture but I wasn't sure which. I was in the middle of editing when I started thinking of a friend that has been going through a hard time for awhile now. Psalm 30:5 is a verse that gives HOPE. A HOPE that is CERTAIN.

Then I started thinking about several other people whom I love dearly that are going through hard times. My thoughts drifted to many who were going through hard times but have once again found joy. They overcame.

Have you found yourself in a dark place or on a road with rocks and trash littering the path? Do you feel like the weight of this world is on your shoulders? Please know that God is with you and you will get through this. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."

Happy Father’s Day 2013

A Father’s Love

A father is respected because he gives his children leadership…
appreciated because he gives his children care…
valued because he gives his children time…
loved because he gives his children the one thing they treasure most – HIMSELF.

-         Author Unknown

"The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him."
- Proverbs 20:7

A DAD is...

A Son's First Hero

A Daughter's First Love

Happy Father's Day Tim! I'm so glad we're a team with this parenting stuff because it can be hard. Yet, there is no greater gift as great as a child and no greater responsibility than being a parent. God is our Center. I love you very much. Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day Dad! I have a million wonderful childhood memories because of you. Thank you for all the simple things-the spontaneous acts of kindness, an encouraging word just when I needed it, and a strong hug just to say I love you. I love you lots Daddy!!

With Love,

June 4th

 Still Are
No more of a little person than baby bird still sleeping in its egg. The shell that never cracked open is the child that stopped growing in his mother’s womb. In an instant her whole life changed-the moment she found out they were expecting you. Your family and friends were expecting you. Yet, just as the seasons change so did their expectations and the realization that you were no more. Something better and more extravagant was also expecting you and now they understand why the Heavens won your soul. You were His. You still are.

I thought of you today and smiled

Psalm 139: 1-18
 1 O LORD, You have searched me and known me.
 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up;
         You understand my thought afar off.
 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down,
         And are acquainted with all my ways.
 4 For there is not a word on my tongue,
         But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.
 5 You have hedged me behind and before,
         And laid Your hand upon me.
 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
         It is high, I cannot attain it.

 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit?
         Or where can I flee from Your presence?
 8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
         If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
 9 If I take the wings of the morning,
         And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me,
         And Your right hand shall hold me.
 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall[a] on me,”
         Even the night shall be light about me;
 12 Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
         But the night shines as the day;
         The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

 13 For You formed my inward parts;
         You covered me in my mother’s womb.
 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;[b]
         Marvelous are Your works,
         And that my soul knows very well.
 15 My frame was not hidden from You,
         When I was made in secret,
         And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
 16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
         And in Your book they all were written,
         The days fashioned for me,
         When as yet there were none of them.

 17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
         How great is the sum of them!
 18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
         When I awake, I am still with You.

Heaven-My Forever Home

I went to a funeral yesterday and felt such sadness. Yet at the same time I felt God's presence and love in that room. My friend and co-worker lost her 26 yr old daughter several days ago.  In addition to such tragic news, the reality that she left behind a 2 week old baby girl continues to drown my mind in sorrow. My friend stood for about 4 hours greeting each and every person who came to give their respect and prayers. I'm sure she must have found her strength in God last night. Only God can carry us through such trials. Do you sense other peoples sorrow? Do you feel their pain in the pit of your stomach? I do. I was very nervous about going to the funeral. The last funeral I attended was my aunt’s funeral last year. She fought cancer for 5 years. We were able to say our goodbyes. This family was not.

As I was preparing for the funeral I listened to Christian music and prayed. God gave me a vision that eased my mind. Funerals are for saying goodbye and honoring that person’s life; realizing that their life was important and made a difference to others. People are sad-they are mourning. They are grief-stricken. They wear dark colors. They are often in a state of numbness and shock. In the darkness however there is light...for Christians there is always The Promise. John 3:16 The Promise of eternal life-you see once we leave this life we begin our new life in Heaven. As we are mourning the loss of life here on earth, there is great Rejoicing and Light in Heaven. Now obviously I’ve never seen Heaven, but I imagine entering the pearly gates with a smile of excitement and a loving welcome party beside me ushering me in. I imagine it to be the total opposite of what we do on earth. No sadness. No pain-for the old things will pass away. There is a place waiting for me. John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

A few weeks ago my husband and I had a brief conversation. Here is how a part of it went:
Me: “You know what’s pretty neat?
Tim: What?
Me: That we will be together forever, for all eternity.”
Tim: Yeah that’s pretty awesome. You know it won’t be the same though. You won’t be my wife.
Me: I know. It will be even better.

Yes, indeed it will be better. Praise God for His Promise.

So in the depths of our darkest hour-the hour when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, whether it is our own or the death of a loved one, may we hold on to God’s Promise and know that we will be united with our loved ones again. For us, light can always be found in the darkness. Praise to Jesus! My forever home is HEAVEN. Read Philippians 3:20

.

Holding onto that Promise.

Blessings,
Shawna

                                              "I Can Only Imagine"

I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side

I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine

[Chorus:]
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

I can only imagine
When that day comes
And I find myself
Standing in the Son

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine

Family Time During Teacher Appreciation Days

 Over the last 2 weekends we have taken advantage of Teacher Appreciation Days in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. We took Makayla and Jackson to Ripley’s Aquarium and strolled around downtown Gatlinburg. I have to admit I’m a little partial to Gatlinburg; an adorable quaint town that hosts so many tourists yet still has a hometown feel. The kids were treated to their first chocolate covered banana and they loved it. Was it worth $3 bucks? Definitely! The kids enjoyed every bite.
(these are taken with my camera phone...I'm saving up to get a new camera...a real one)

at the aquarium

This past weekend Tim and I took a date day while MG and Jack had a fun filled day at Nana and Grandad’s house. Amelia, Anna Catherine, and Annabel were visiting so it was a house full of sweet children. Aunt Summer was there too so it was a special treat. Makayla and Jackson took the cookies they had made the night before. When we picked them up that evening we saw that all the cookies had been eaten and neither Makayla or Jackson had taken naps that day. Did it really surprise me since they were “SUGAR COOKIES”.

Jack, Anna Catherine, Amelia, Annabel, Makayla
So while the kids were busy playing and eating cookies Tim and I were busy at the FREE attractions in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. We had a blast at The Tomb. We were successful archeologists who escaped the wrath of the Pharaoh. It was interesting and a little bit funny. Then we went to the Mirror Maze, Put-Putt, and a 5D Theater. Did I tell you it was all for FREE? Hey that might not be a big deal for some people but it is for us. I really appreciate all the local companies doing Teacher Appreciation Days. For a total of $30 bucks we visited 4 attractions, had garage parking, ate a delicious Mexican lunch (blue corn tortilla rolled enchiladas), and had desert (my favorite food on a stick: Caramel apple rolled in chopped nuts). What a blessing these small things can be!
only thing running through my mind: walk like an Egyption...

My Puzzle Prince. :-)

"cheat meal" although we skipped the rice altogether. It was really good.

I’m so thankful for all the treasures in this life whether big or small.

~ The smiles on my children’s faces

~ The chocolate on Makayla’s face while she says, ‘This is so good Mommy. Thank you sooo much!”

~ Jackson’s cheer, with arms raised, as he sees the penguins for the first time

~ The beauty of the mountains surrounding us

~ The gentle breeze and autumn’s falling leaves that speak God’s perfect creation

~ The strangers that smile as they walk past

~ The long awaited date day with my husband; a time to reconnect during this busy season of our lives

~ Knowing my children are being loved more than we know while visiting their grandaparents

~ Orange pumpkins’ everywhere which give light to the fall harvest

~ The sun on my face as I count my blessings, knowing every single blessing is from my Father

~ The strength God has given me over the last several weeks to fight adversity in terms of health problems. He is my strength.

~ Tim getting several little jobs on the side that has helped us pay our daycare bill-not to mention the after school tutoring job I’m doing. God is providing for us daily. We pray that we stay in His Will. We pray that if He opens doors that we see them and not be too busy to pass it by. We pray that every decision we make is in God’s Will and that He would shut doors that are not His Will and open the ones that are. He is able. I want to live for Him always.

God is in the details of life. Thank you Jesus!

My 30 Day Challenge Extended…I’m on Day 130

On April 1 I decided to make a change for the better. I was, and still am, determined to be the healthiest ‘me’ possible. My first food change was decreasing the bread products I consume on a daily basis. I traded in my morning bagel with cream cheese for yogurt with berries or a tofu scramble w/olive oil and vegetables. I also stopped eating frozen meals for lunch. I’ve always been a real big bread eater. I don’t eat much meat so breads and pastas were my typical lunch and dinners. As of today I have cut a lot of that out of my diet and feeling great. Of course I occasionally have something sweet that is not a whole food, but on a typical basis I stick with healthier food choices. I still eat some whole wheat bread products but I'm focusing on whole foods which haven't been processed-you know foods without all those additives. If I can't pronounce the ingredients, I have a hard time believing it's good for me or my family! I’ve eaten pizza probably four times in the last four months. If you know me then you know pizza was always my favorite meal. Unfortunately, it also causes me major bloating and weight gain. It’s not my friend. :-( So I've traded an easy pizza dinner for baked/grilled chicken with veggies. On occasion my daughter and I will have fun making a homemade pizza-at least in that case we can control the ingredients....and can pronounce them.:-)

My initial goal was to start exercising. They say moderate exercise is 30 minutes three times a week. So I wanted to find out if I would lose weight if I started exercising; thus was the start of my 30 Day Challenge. I had wanted to exercise for quite some time. I truly enjoyed jogging in my late teens/early 20’s but my body has changed so much since then; mostly my fault but not completely. Along with scoliosis of the spine, I have a type of rheumatoid arthritis. The last 1 ½ years have been a huge struggle mentally, physically, and emotionally. Thankfully my rheumatologist was able to find the right medicine for me to begin feeling better. Though I still have pain, some days are still bad, overall I am much better (cold weather is awful for me!). I felt better and therefore it was the perfect time to try to exercise. I started jogging and walking intervals on April 1st. I did about 12 miles a week for about a month. I iced my ankles and feet just about everyday that first month. The pain was awful but I knew I had to do it for me…for my kids…for God. He gave me this body and I haven’t taken care of it like I should. I lost about 2 pounds the first month, depending on the day. I was a little disappointed but proud of myself that I hadn’t given up. I decided to continue and change my 30 Day Challenge to a Life Challenge. Trust me, it hasn’t been easy at all but I didn’t expect it to be. Almost 4 months later my workout time just fits into our daily schedule. Sometimes the kids exercise with me, other times Tim will watch them. Sometimes we will go on a walk/stroll as a family. I’ve come to look forward to exercising because I know it’s good for me. I push myself, but I know my limits. I workout 5 days a week now for at least 50 minutes each. I’m just now pushing for even longer. It’s been too hot to jog outdoors much so I’ve been doing a cardio dvd most days. I no longer take my Prednisone and pray that I don’t have to restart anytime soon. That has been great! I’m still taking my other arthritis meds and know they are truly helping me right now. My back hurts often and recently my knees have been awful. Am I pushing myself too hard? I don’t know…maybe…but I’m not quitting. Please pray that those things will ease up soon. I am not giving up. I have not met my goal yet but I hope to by the end of this year….I am not giving up…I will push myself…I will better myself. This is not easy.

Anytime I feel like I can’t go on, when the pain is too hard to bear, when I don’t have the energy, or have too much on my mind, I imagine Jesus jogging right beside me cheering me on and telling me “You can do this”.  Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

So if you have a change you want to make in your life but you don’t know where to start, Start with Him…start with God. He is my source of strength, and my cup runs over. You might say or think it’s not a big deal to start exercising, and maybe you’re right to an extent, but it has been hard for me. I give God all the glory for my endurance and the mind to stay focused. I hope that you too will put your faith in God and know that He is always with those who trust in Him. When it gets difficult just know that Jesus is right beside you.

Remember: The most important change starts on the inside.

Progress To Date: I’m down 16 pounds and 20 inches, and on my way to a healthier 'me'.

A Nap Sounds Nice

Okay I barely got any sleep last night (less than the 5 hours I usually get)- Jackson has his first molars coming in and he is miserable-won't eat, won't sleep, just wants to cry and bite everything! Makayla has two 2-year molars coming in & is fussy too. Needless to say my kids have been very whiny. Last week both kids were sick and now they are teething. All this and trying to keep my house clean since it’s on the market is very tiring. I’m feeling just a wee-bit overwhelmed and was hoping to get out of the house today and take Makayla to the science museum - but I didn’t have anyone to watch Jackson so we didn’t go. I really wanted to do something fun and uplifting today…maybe a stroll around the neighborhood will have to do.

I leave this short little post with some scripture….Thank God for his Word that encourages, convicts, and provides perfect comfort during days of frustration, exhaustion, and remembering past heartache that this particular day brings for me.

Psalm 139
 1 O LORD, You have searched me and known me.
 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up;
         You understand my thought afar off.
 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down,
         And are acquainted with all my ways.

         But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.
 5 You have hedged me behind and before,
         And laid Your hand upon me.
 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

         How great is the sum of them!
 18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
         When I awake, I am still with You.

 19 Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God!
         Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.
 20 For they speak against You wickedly;
         Your enemies take Your name in vain.[c]
 21 Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate You?
         And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
 22 I hate them with perfect hatred;
         I count them my enemies.

 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
         Try me, and know my anxieties;
 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
         And lead me in the way everlasting.

In memory of Baby Finstad that was due June 4, 2008. * not forgotten by me-not ever.

Now I’m headed to rock my sweet baby toddler boy to sleep. Makayla just fell asleep on the couch and a nap does indeed sound nice. Snuggles and cuddles with my kids--- the best cuddles in world.

Lovin summer break and praying my kids feel better really soon,

Angel Wings

Click on the picture for a better & larger look.
I made this picture a few days ago. We think it looks like angel wings. What do you think?

The beauty of God's creation is all around us everyday. We just need to open our eyes and see all the majesty in His Creation!

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Psalm 91:11

When I'm Not Enough

It’s New Year’s Eve and I’m awake. I guess a lot of people are up preparing to celebrate the New Year, but here I am in a fairly quiet house-the cat’s eating food, Jackson’s sleeping peacefully in his crib, and Tim and Makayla are sleeping on the couch. I started reading information about the ‘She Speaks’ conference through Proverbs 31 Ministries and I just happen to stumble upon someone’s personal blog-I think I read her blog for over an hour and during that hour guilt of my inadequacies crept up on my shoulders. I’ve realized that as much as I pride myself on not taking things for granted, that I actually do…and on a daily basis. I am so ashamed for that.

I don’t tell Tim enough just how much he means to me, how much I adore him, how proud I am of him, how much I depend on him, and that he means the world to me in every way possible-He is my soul mate and my best friend, the person I love sharing all my thoughts and feelings with, the one I share all my worries and fears with, the one who picks me up when I fall, the one I share all my victories and happiness with. I have not told him these things enough. Tim, thank you for showing me love by holding my hand, going on evening walks, praying for me and with me, taking out the trash, folding laundry, letting me sleep in on Saturday mornings, being an encourager, loving me and all my flaws, cooking me perfect egg and cheese sandwiches, letting me be the sweet tea taste tester, listening to me, and believing in me. How did I ever get so lucky to walk life’s journey with you? You know my love language like no one else, and we are forever connected as one by God’s gracious love. You truly are my other half-I am complete with you, my love.

I don’t tell my mom and dad enough just what an impact they’ve made on my life. They’ve been there through thick and then, loved me through my rebellious days, and boy there were plenty of those; gotten me out of trouble, given me a shoulder to cry on, prayed over and for me, comforted me after bad dreams and circumstances, brushed my hair, showed me how to take care of a car, and taught me that family is most important. Not to mention those times when Mom filled up my pantry and refrigerator with food. And the many times Dad wanted to take my car for a drive, and then returned it with a full tank of gas. You both have cared for me and loved me unconditionally. I have not thanked you enough. Mom and Dad, you both are amazing people whom I will always adore.

I don’t tell my sisters enough just how much I need them. What can I say, out of all people you are the two that put up with me all those years growing up. Lol. The ones who loved me, said everything would be okay, gave me 2 baby showers, hugged me, supported me on my wedding day, wrote songs and poems with me, babysat for me so I could go on a date with my husband. Thanks for being the best sisters in the world. Summer and April, thanks for being such special friends to me. I don’t tell you enough how much I need you. I hope I will always show the same wonderful friendship to you as you’ve shown to me. Love you both.

I have to say that I’m constantly telling my kids how much I love and adore them, and how proud I am at each new milestone and accomplishment. I pray for them and over them, but I don’t pray with them enough. Although they are both very young (especially Jackson) I can still be an example to them and lead them in the way to pray so that hopefully one day they will feel comfortable in their own personal conversations with God. Makayla and Jackson, you two and your daddy are the angels in my life. Thank you for showing me such beauty in little things I take for granted-I pray that I will pray with you more and together we will have conversations with God. I love you both so much!

There are many other people on my heart as I write tonight- I just know that I need to take more time to love on these people-I need to be more intentional on making the people in my life feel special and loved. I pray that God will use my self-reflection tonight to help me slow down and show His love and light through my words and actions. My family is so wonderful and I couldn’t be more blessed. I am inadequate, not enough- but thankfully God’s grace is perfectly sufficient and I praise Him for that. “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Why Don’t They Believe?...a poem from the heart

I’m so amazed by you Lord, how you chose to come for me
As a baby boy wrapped in cloth for warmth

 Why Don’t They Believe?

Dear God,

They say you don’t exist
You seek them but they still resist
They think we are all alone
Yet one day we’ll be forever home

Oh, why don’t they believe?

They don’t believe you came for me
In perfect harmony
With this world that you designed
From the start we were in your mind

If only they could feel what I feel
If only they could see what I’ve seen
If only they could hear your voice
In the stillness of a summer breeze
Oh why don’t they believe?

They unashamedly say your name in vain
Ignore your anger when you send the stormy rain
Go on and on as if they’re right
Disregard your power, glory, and might

Oh, why don’t they believe?

They don’t believe you came for me
In perfect harmony
With this world that you designed
From the start we were in your mind

If only they could feel what I feel
If only they could see what I’ve seen
If only they could hear your voice
In the stillness of a summer breeze
Oh why don’t they believe?

They say they haven’t felt your presence
Well I’ve felt your Holy Spirit in my very essence
They say they haven’t heard your voice
Well I’ve heard your voice again and again
They need to know it’s all about choice
They say they haven’t seen you before
Well, I’ve seen you - in my dreams, in the beauty of the sunset, in the colors of a rainbow, in my child’s eyes, the dew in the morning, the snow falling in pure perfection, a perfect summer’s night, the stars in the sky, the sun shining bright, in the vows on my wedding day, in the words on a page, the painted fall landscapes, the soaring mountains, the blooming flowers in the spring, the grand oceans, the soft sand on my feet, all the delights and happiness I’ll ever need-I’ve seen the ones you’ve sent- the angels watching over us-Oh how I want them to believe, they must-they really must.

Oh, why don’t they believe?

They don’t believe you came for me
In perfect harmony
With this world that you designed
From the start we were in your mind

If only they could feel what I feel
If only they could see what I’ve seen
If only they could hear your voice
In the stillness of a summer breeze
Oh why don’t they believe?

Not only did you come for me, you came for them too
I want them to know that You can make them new

Your Child,
Shawna

I’ll keep praying for the lost; the broken; the ones who don’t believe
Because some things are REAL whether you believe them or not.
God Bless & Merry Christmas! Christ is surely the REASON for the SEASON!

Priceless Potential for Children- Proud of My 2nd Graders!

For a moment I thought to myself, “Can second graders do a book report or am I asking too much from them? My second thought was something like this, “We should never doubt that a child can do something because if you doubt that a child can do it then they probably won’t-even if they can. If you encourage a child and praise them for their effort they just may surprise you.”
Kids want to know that you are proud of the hard work they did.”
I am an optimistic teacher. I truly believe that given the right environment, with clear directions and a supportive atmosphere, that children will rise to the occasion and learning will be maximized.

Here are just a few of the book reports my 2nd grade students did.Click on the picture to get a better view of their awesome work!

Here are just 4 of them. I have 16 more hanging on my classroom walls.

Book report for a fiction story

-one for non-fiction-

A high expectation for your children (students) to do their personal best naturally creates an atmosphere of accomplishment. These accomplishments or “achievements” may or may not appear as ‘proficient’ or ‘advanced’ on a standardized achievement test, but they will appear as priceless potential in the hearts of our children. I personally believe that “in the heart is where it starts!”

Words to leave you with today.
Remember to praise your children, whether it is your own children or other children in your life-or both. Encourage them, love them, and let them know by your words and actions that you care and are for them. Above all, let them know that love and kindness bring light into this world. After all, our children today are our leaders of tomorrow.

I Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…”

Her Journey Home Today

  This morning Aunt Joy’s fight with cancer was over. She stopped breathing here on earth and breathed her next breath in the presence of Jesus. I can only imagine what that moment was like…meeting Jesus face-to-face. She will be missed by so many people here.  We will remember the good times before she was sick, and also the good times when cancer fell upon her earthly body. I am grateful to God for giving us those beautiful memories.

My dad went down to visit her over the weekend, and returned to Knoxville early this morning. My dad has always been such a great comforter to people, so I know his visit to see his sister and mother was all part of God’s plan. I am reminded of verse John 14:15-17 Our hope is that the Holy Spirit who dwells within us will bring comfort during trouble times.

Leaning on the Ever Lasting God,
Shawna

Let Faith Arise

 A song I’ve heard many times before has become a song of devotion for me over the last week. God is, indeed, faithful forever. He is the true Healer. Praise be to Jesus!

I Lift My Hands lyrics
Songwriters: Christopher Tomlin;Matt Maher;Louie Giglio

Be still, there is a healer
His love is deeper than the sea
His mercy, it is unfailing
His arms are fortress for the weak

Let faith arise
Let faith arise

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart
These things, I remember
You are faithful, God, forever

Be still, there is a river
That flows from Calvary's tree
A fountain for the thirsty
Pure grace that washes over me

Let faith arise
Let faith arise

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart
These things, I remember
You are faithful, God, forever
(From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/chris-tomlin-lyrics/i-lift-my-hands-lyrics.html)

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart
These things, I remember
You are faithful, God, forever

Let faith arise, let faith arise
Open my eyes, open my eyes
Let faith arise, let faith arise
Open my eyes, open my eyes

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart
These things, I remember
You are faithful, God, forever

And I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart
These things, I remember
You are faithful, God
You are faithful, God, forever

Let faith arise
Let faith arise

Prayers of Hope

Well this last week has had many ups and downs. My Aunt Joy was diagnosed with breast cancer about 5 years ago. Recently she learned it was back and spread to her liver, lungs, and chest. She has been through her share of pain over the years and it has been difficult witnessing that struggle. This week she was transported to the hospital by ambulance where she still is today. I pray for God to give her strength, comfort, and peace. God is our steadfast comforter. Our hope is that the Holy Spirit who dwells within us will bring comfort during trouble times. (John 14:15-17)

My Dad fell at work a few weeks ago and injured his knee. He is feeling a lot of pain, and trying to fully recover. He is also hurting for his sister (Aunt Joy) and wants so badly for her to get better. I pray that he will feel the words God has laid before us: Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

My older sister Summer and her husband Joe had hoped to start a family soon. They recently learned that having children of their own may not be in God’s plan. However they remain hopeful for the One who performs everyday miracles will perform a miracle for them. Summer told me that she is reminded of Elizabeth in the Bible; God blessed Elizabeth with a child and we are reminded how nothing is impossible for God. I pray for their continued sense of peace in their hearts, and that they would find God’s grace in the everyday lives.

My sister April and her fiancĂ© Scott are expecting a baby girl in January. We are all very excited to meet this precious angel sent from above. This week they learned that the baby has a medical condition which requires surgery right after birth, and a 4-6 week stay in the hospital. Naturally, my sister is scared, stressed out, and uncertain about the future. I pray that April and Scott will seek God in their times of emotional struggle. I pray they will find comfort in each other and feel God’s agape love through this journey. I pray for their little girl’s health as well. I know God’s love for His children is much more than our minds can comprehend, and He will take care of her. I know that God has a plan for this baby girl, a plan far greater than any of ours. Sometimes it’s hard to see the Big Picture when our world is so small. Scott and April haven’t decided on a name yet, but for now April is calling her Hope

I typically don’t publish these types of entries about my family on the internet, but it’s been on my heart to publish this blog entry regarding these specific things. I don’t want to sound like only sad things are going on because trust me there are also many wonderful things happening right now. But hurting people need prayers and my hope is that anyone reading this will lift up my family members in prayer. Also, pray for my mom as she feels the weight of all these issues right now. Please join me in prayer for each person written about; that they will feel God’s grace, goodness, mercy, joy, comfort, peace, and love. For there doesn’t have to be suffering for there to be grace…but where there is suffering, grace overflows.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)

There is always hope with God. :-)
God Bless,
Shawna

p.s. I want to thanks several of my co-workers who have known what’s been going on over the last week. Every person has something going on in their life, and it’s important that we lift each other up. It was so special to me when several women greeted me at my classroom door with hugs, words of encouragement, and just to say they are praying for my family. Wow! I am blessed to work with them.

a little poem

To have my heart, to have my heart breaking
Sunshine feels my soul-He is the one making
He’s making me new

Oh but I still feel not good enough
Bruised and scarred
Never been good enough, just hanging on
I’m tired of this weakness--just wanna be tough
Bruised and scarred, waiting for a new dawn

To have my heart, to have my heart breaking
Sunshine feels my soul-He is the one making
He’s making me new

Always felt like the one out of place
So use to coming in second
Or maybe even last, stepped on twice
Tried so hard yet never one the race
Wonder why I even try to be nice

To have my heart, to have my heart breaking
Sunshine feels my soul-He is the one making
He’s making me new

I am changing inside, but there are some who are not
I pray for them to find Him. Just find Him
Please find Him
He has given rest to my soul, and taken burdens out
Of my heart
He will never leave me, He will never part

To have my heart, to have my heart breaking
Breaking for the ones who long to feel peace
He can fill your soul with light, and make you
….new

as Sanctus Real said,
"When I don't measure up to much in this life
Oh, I'm a treasure in the arms of Christ "
